HISTORICAL CENTER

In the Historic Center of Kalamata, you will find the Square of 23rd of March. It was named in honor of the city’s liberation from the Turks in 1821. The Square of 23rd of March not only encapsulates the history but also the energy of Kalamata. The declaration of the revolution took place in the Church of the Holy Apostles, located at the center of the square, and it was also where the first celebration for the liberation occurred.

Surrounding the square, there are shops, cafes, bars, and taverns.

CENTRAL SQUARE

The central square of Kalamata, with several cafes and pastry shops. It has been the focal point of the city’s public life since its establishment in 1938, with its latest redevelopment taking place during the period 2012-13. In the southern part, there is a characteristic fountain (“Fish”), while another fountain is located at the northern end, surrounded by numerous flower beds and lush greenery. It is surrounded by the heart of the commercial center.

THE CASTLE IZAMBO

The castle was a hereditary fiefdom of the Villehardouin family from 1205 to 1322. The brave knight Guillaume de Villehardouin, prince of Achaea, and his daughter, the legendary Isabella, were born here. She was the eldest daughter of Prince Guillaume II de Villehardouin of Achaea and the heiress apparent. Her fame extended beyond the borders of Messenia, thanks to the novel “Princess Isabella” by Angelos Terzakis, considered one of the best novels in modern Greek literature.

The castle consists of two fortified enclosures and an inner fortress. Above the central arched entrance, if one pays attention, they will see the lion of St. Mark of Venice

RAIL PARK

The outdoor park-museum covers an area of ​​54 acres and has been operating since 1986, hosting various cultural activities.

Within the area, apart from steam locomotives and wagons, there are fountains, small lakes, sports fields, playgrounds, an outdoor amphitheater, and a refreshment stand (in the old station building).
